The wait is over! California Lottery officials have confirmed that a group of winners has come forward to claim the massive $1.765 billion Powerball jackpot from the October 11th drawing. This windfall marks the second-largest jackpot prize in Powerball history.
The winning ticket was purchased at Midway Market, a family-run business in Frazier Park, a small mountain town with a population of around 3,000. Theodorus Struyck was named as the representative of the winning group. While the exact number of people in the group remains unknown, Struyck, a 65-year-old local resident, is described as a friendly neighbor who lives just a short distance from the store.
California law requires the winner’s name and the retailer’s name to be made public. This contrasts with some other states like Arizona, Georgia, and New Jersey, where lottery winners can choose anonymity.
For selling the lucky ticket, Midway Market received a cool $1 million bonus check. Nidal “Andy” Khalil, the co-owner of the store, initially had trouble believing the news, but the flurry of congratulatory messages soon confirmed the reality of the win.
This historic win falls short only of Edwin Castro’s record-breaking $2.04 billion California Powerball win in November 2022. Interestingly, California players have a knack for striking lottery gold, having co-won or won outright the top four largest Powerball jackpots exceeding $1 billion each since 2016.
The October 11th drawing not only made lucky winners, but it also generated an additional $119.5 million for California public schools, highlighting the positive impact of the lottery beyond individual windfalls.
“Announcing big wins like this gives all of our players the chance to hope and dream that they could be next,” said Harjinder K. Shergill Chima, the California Lottery Director. Chima went on to emphasize the lottery’s role in supporting public education through ticket sales and partnerships with retailers.
